Dr. James R. Newcomb

A celebration of the life of Dr. James R. Newcomb has been scheduled for 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 26, 2016 at First United Methodist Church, Broken Arrow. Burial will follow at Park Grove Cemetery under the direction of Hayhurst Funeral Home. Friends may visit the funeral home on Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and family will be there to receive visitors from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Dr. James “Jim” Newcomb was born in Batavia, Arkansas on Wednesday, May 9, 1928 to Vern and Mildred (Murdy) Newcomb. Jim passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2016. He was 88 years of age. Jim served his country during the Korean war as an Army Corporal and an Artillery Instructor. In 1950, Jim married Donna Sorrells and their union endured more than fifty years before Donna’s passing in 2007. In 2008, Jim found love again and married Theresa (Johnson) Hayhurst. Jim was a wonderful husband and father. He was a devoted and supportive family man with a strong faith who raised all his children in the church. Jim established Newcomb Chiropractic Clinic on Main Street in Broken Arrow in 1957. He loved caring for his patients and improving their lives. He was so dedicated to his patients and profession that he did not retire until the age of 78. When he did allow himself time to relax and have fun, he loved boating at the lake and traveling in his motorhome. An active and productive member of society, Jim was always involved in his community. He served as Broken Arrow’s mayor from 1967-1975. Jim was also a Broken Arrow City Council Member, Legislative Chairman for the Broken Arrow Chamber of Commerce, and an active Rotarian since 1975. Jim was also committed to First United Methodist Church of Broken Arrow and was a member there since 1957. He was especially connected with the Sunday School classes. Newcomb is survived by, Wife, Theresa Newcomb, Broken Arrow, OK Children, Hope Walker and husband Bruce, Broken Arrow, OK Russell Newcomb and wife Gloria, Great Bend, KS Kim Lynn and husband Brent, Broken Arrow, OK Dr. Brent Newcomb and wife Suzanne, Broken Arrow, OK Ann Chambers, Spavinaw, OK Grandchildren, Shelli, Chelsey and Silas, Adam and Michala, Jeremy, Jordan, Dr. Doug and Amanda, Jared and Ashley, Leah and Tyler, Tony, Aaron 9 Great Grandchildren Siblings, Byron Newcomb, Kansas City, MO Edwin Newcomb, Kansas City, MO Joyce Post, Nevada, MO Paul Newcomb, St. Thomas, USVI Clara Frederickson and husband Steve, Seattle, WA Numerous nieces, nephews and other loving family and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents and first wife Donna.
