May 5, 1940 - August 21, 2021
A Graveside Committal Service has been scheduled for 1:00 PM, Monday, August 30, 2021 at Park Grove Cemetery in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. Vada “Delores” Powell was born in Booneville, Arkansas on Sunday, May 5, 1940, to G.F. and Leacy (Brigance) Wilson, the youngest of three daughters. She passed from this life to her eternal home on Saturday, August 21, 2021, in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the age of 81. Delores grew up on the family farm, where she learned the value of hard work through her daily chores, along with her two sisters. Her father was determined that she and her sisters get a college education. She graduated from Booneville High School in 1957 and received her Associate degree from Southwestern Bible Institute in Waxahachie, Texas in 1959. She later received her bachelor’s degree in Education from Evangel College in Springfield, Missouri. Shortly after college, she met Dolan Powell at an Assembly of God Church in Louisiana, as he was completing his basic training for the Army National Guard. The two married on July 31, 1965, in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where they made their home for 56 years. They eventually became parents to three children, Kendra Dawn, Lehmahn, and Talmadge. Delores spent her professional career in early childhood education. Retiring from Broken Arrow Public Schools, she also operated a day care center for pre-school age children, where she continued her love of nurturing children. Delores loved decorating and explored her creativity by taking classes at Tulsa Technology Center in Floral Design. She always enjoyed decorating her home for every holiday season. Her flower gardens and lawn were the envy of their neighborhood. Delores was also a great cook. Her husband and son both agree that her fried chicken, biscuits, and gravy were their favorite. Delores and Dolan have been members of Victory Christian Center for 39 years. The words her family used to describe her: feisty, passionate, serious, and a wonderful caregiver to both her mother and sister in the final months of their lives. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Dolan Powell, of Broken Arrow; Son, Talmadge Powell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Grandson, Michael Powell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Great Granddaughter, Sabriel Powell of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; and numerous relatives, life-long friends, and extended family. Preceding her in death are her parents, G.F. and Leacy Wilson, her son, Lehmahn “Lee” Powell, her daughter, Kendra Dawn Powell (as an infant), and her beloved sisters, Melba Widman and Wanda Wilson. Visitation will be on Monday, August 30 from 12:00 PM to 12:45 PM at Hayhurst Funeral Home in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Tulsa Dream Center, at TulsaDreamCenter.org.
