Lois Hammond

Private services are being held. Lois Belcher Hammond was born on April 19, 1924, in Fargo, North Dakota. She was the first child of four children, born to Lester and Blanche Belcher. She lived on a farm and attended school in Grandin, North Dakota. The school provided piano lessons which she took, all the way through high school and did very well. She also had a pretty alto voice and enjoyed singing in the choir. She was also very active in high school basketball. Lois then went to Sioux Falls College in South Dakota. Here she met her future husband Paul Hammond. He joined the Army Air Corps, so after her first year, she returned home and attended North Dakota State in Fargo, North Dakota. Lois became engaged to Paul while he was in the military. She traveled by train from Fargo to Phoenix, Arizona. They were married June 3, 1944. They had four children, Paulette (deceased), Nancy, Doug, and Kenny. Lois and Paul just celebrated their 76th wedding anniversary. Lois was a wonderful homemaker. She loved caring for her husband, the family, and their home. She loved her children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was always so happy when family got together. She enjoyed cooking and was especially talented at making the best peanut brittle and pecan pies. Gardening was a favorite pass time and always had beautiful flowers. In the house, she enjoyed knitting and blessed many with hand made gifts. She made afghans for babies and for nursing home residents, slippers for family, and dish cloths for many. She enjoyed antique shops and always had an eye for pretty items. Lois enjoyed playing board games and card games with her family and friends. Bridge was her favorite card game and she did quite well. She played in different groups over the years and always enjoyed her friends. Lois dearly loved traveling. Always ready for a new place and new adventure. She and Paul always had summer family vacations. Many were family reunions in Iowa, and later in various destinations. They went on family wilderness backpacking trips in Wyoming. They took several nice trips to Europe, Israel, Canada, the Caribbean, Hawaii and Alaska. Lois was always active in their church. She especially liked singing in the choir. She and Paul enjoyed square dancing for a few years. Lois was especially excited this year to reach the age of 96. Anything having to do with her family brought her great joy. She was a very kind and loving wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, and friend. She will be dearly missed by many. Lois is survived by her children Nancy Roberts, Doug Hammond and wife Marquita, Kenny Hammond and wife Cindi, 7 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren
