Delva Montag

Delva Inez (Barens) Montag was born in Salus, Arkansas on Saturday, February 10, 1934, to Oliver Barens and Nellie (Rhoades) Barens. She passed from this life on Tuesday, May 24, 2022, at her home in Broken Arrow surrounded by her family at the age of 88. Delva was the 8th of 12 children born to the Barens. Her parents were farmers and her mother also worked at a canning factory. They traveled to California for a few of her growing up years working harvest. After they moved back to Arkansas, during her teen years she fell in love with a neighbor boy by the name of Merlin Montag. The two snuck off to get married on June 29, 1951 so that he could get home in time to feed the chickens, and then formally tied the knot, in Tontitown, Arkansas in August. They became parents of four children. The family moved to Broken Arrow in 1965 after having lived in various other places. They were charter members of the Church of Saint Benedict in Broken Arrow for 34 years. Delva was a very attentive mother but when her children got older, she worked at the school cafeteria for Broken Arrow Public Schools. They enjoyed camping and traveling around the country as a family. Her hobbies included embroidery, genealogy, and sewing. She was a wonderful cook. Swedish meatballs were one of her specialties. Delva was a breast cancer survivor. Her children describe her as loving, always available, a good listener, supportive and understanding. She was “Grandma” or “Grandma Delva” to her grands and great grands. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in Delva’s name to the Susan G. Komen Foundation at: www.komen.org Left to cherish her memory are Son, Mike Montag (Lori) of Broken Arrow Daughter, Pam Montag of Broken Arrow Daughter, Debbie Hightower (Dan) of Nowata 7 Grandchildren: Chris (Shannon), Emily (Alan), Brad (Lindsay), Melissa (Casey), Patrick, Wes (Elena), and Jessica (David) 13 Great Grandchildren: Olivia, Harper, Chloe, Miles, Charlotte, Henry, Cora, McKinzie, Malliah, Georgia, Franklin, Abigail, and Alexis Sisters: Arti Burton of Fayetteville, Arkansas Wilma Robinson of Springdale, Arkansas And many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
