Betty Lane

Betty Katherine Murta Lane was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas on Wednesday, April 29, 1931 to parents, Ward Evan Murta and Vestal Vernell (Nichols) Murta. She passed away in Tulsa on Friday, February 16, 2024 at the age of 92. She touched the lives of many and will be greatly missed. Betty grew up in the Fort Smith, Arkansas area and was a high school senior when she met handsome Richard "Dick" Lane. They married in Fort Smith on March 3, 1949. Betty was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. She believed family was #1 priority, and she relished every moment spent together. Betty had a beautiful smile, but it particularly shone when directed at her grandchildren, the apples of her eye! Betty’s home was always a welcoming place, with colorful geraniums on the front porch, and lovely peonies and hydrangeas in the backyard. You would always be offered a sweet treat and a soda pop, and there was a special drawer in the kitchen filled with small toys, coloring books and other goodies for any little children who would come to visit. She was fiercely loyal to her kin, and was truly the glue of the family. Betty loved to socialize, and her bridge games were more about spending time with her friends than actually playing the game. Her best friends were her two sisters, Dorothy and Vestal, and even though for the most part they lived in different cities, it was rare for a day to go by without her talking to them on the phone. As a working mother, Betty headed up the Accessories Department at the old Woolf Brothers Department store, where her love of fashion was put to good use. Betty was also an excellent shopper, and loved to give gifts to her family and friends. When time allowed, Betty liked to travel. Two of her favorite places to go with her husband and other family members were Las Vegas and Hot Springs, AR, where they would attend the horse races. She loved watching the Kentucky Derby every year and always had a favorite horse. When she was younger, she visited La Jolla, CA several times, and always talked about it being one of the most beautiful places on earth. Betty was a devout Christian and spent every morning reading her Bible. She did her best to live by the Word and everyone she met was fond of her as she was kind, generous and out-going. Betty was a founding member of Heritage United Methodist Church in Broken Arrow. Lane and Susan Lane of Kansas City, Missouri; Daughter-in-Law, dear friend and caretaker Elizabeth Lane; Grandchildren David/Becki, Michael/Dee, Brad/Kiersten, Patrick/Katy, Nathan, Derek, Piper/Ethan, Mercedes/Erickson, Terra, Gloria; Great-Grandchildren Addyson, Emerson, Ragon, Cate, Greyson, Kinsey, Abigail, Diego, Celeste, Caden, Audrey, Vada, Elijah, Roman, Killian; Sister Vestal Curry of Wimberley Texas; and Many beloved nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Ward Evan and Vestal Murta, her brother Ward Murta, her husband Dick Lane, her sister Dorothy Klein, and her son-in-law, Kent Francy.
